Photo RSS Feed Display
Last Contribution: 2010-05
Status: Live | actively developed
Description
This is my first attempt to actively 'give back'. I've written code snippets that, I hope, are useful to others in the past, but this is an active site that allows others call a 'widget' to host and display thumbnails from a photo (rss/atom) feed. This is useful from the html-dabbling blogger or myspacer to the advanced coder who can't host their own thumbs for some reason, or doesn't want to go through the trouble of parsing a feed when it has already been done and is available. The source is available and there are various methods of using the widget the more difficult ones providing the most flexibility.
Role
I wanted to parse a Photo RSS Feed for use on a personal site of mine (http://nick.chapmanit.com). After I 'finished', I wondered how easy it would be to use the same code to parse Photo RSS Feeds from other sources (FlickR, Picasa...). Turns out, as long as they are well-formed Feeds, that parsing them with the same code usually only required a few minor code changes. So I automated it and cached the thumbnails to decrease bandwidth usage...and what you see is the current version.Features
- html widget
- beginner and intermediate PHP methods
- advanced PHP for the most versatility
- live demo

The Palette is an online art gallery. The site is designed to showcase the available artwork which will be available for sale to the public. The site differs from traditional galleries in that art can also be rented for approved functions in addition to being purchased. There are also frequent promotions which aim to give quality art to site visitors.Role

WPS | DNR Tools
Last Contribution: 2009-11
Status: Functional Demo
Description
It is often argued, perhaps equally often proudly claimed, that programmers are lazy. While some prefer euphemisms like efficient or practical, there is some truth to the claim. The end result of a program is frequently to reduce the time spent on some task -- to automate it. That is the case with this project as I designed it to automate a daily task I was assigned by Waterbury Public Schools. The total time put into the project was greater than what I would have spent individually for about a month, but this program will likely by far outlive my current job designation.Role
I designed this site/web application from the ground up, with some strong design and code references to SPS and a few other past projects. The absences reported for the district are imported daily (automatically) and immediately become available for the DNR Reports. The reports display in the browser and are available in a .csv file for download.Features
- custom script for automated daily imports
- administrative tools for custom imports
- LDAP / Active Directory integration
- secure authentication
- JQuery UI utilization
- custom navbar with location identifier
The Satire
Last Contribution: 2009-06
Status: Live
Description
The Satire is a band comprised of former members of The Blamed/Left out/The Blamed is Dead. I'm a long time fan of their roots and hope to enjoy their new stuff even more. According to them, they are "5 dudes. We just want to have a good time, so come bust a move to where the games are played, it's chill, it's fresh, it'sRole
I contacted The Satire when I noticed their page was no longer live. I told them I'd make a page for them out of love, devotion, and appreciation. They probably considered a restraining order...but agreed to allow me to do my thing. I basically made a Content Management System for housing the information (not database housed yet, but I'm keeping that option available) and am preparing for web-based content management in case the guys want to handle the content control themselves. Otherwise, I'll post content as they provide it.Features
- modularized pages
- custom layout and graphics
- persistant flash based music player

- simple, straightforward navigation
- clear, concise niche content
- lightbox2 graphical overlays
- durpal CMS based

Independent Music Reviews
Last Contribution: 2007-03
Status: Functional Demo
Description
This began as a school project. The assignement was to make a low footprint (graphically minimal, easy on bandwidth) three-tier website. I decided to make a music review website where I could write my thoughts about bands, albums, and live performances. I did not have the database experience I now have and was forced to put the project had to be put on hold.I'm excited about rehashing this project. I'm going to do a redesign, but keep some of the original elements. I'd like to have reviews by myself, my brother, and my wife to start and eventually allow friends to add their reviews as well and potentially much more.
Role
I developed the concept, design, and layout for this site. All graphics are heavy edits of public domain images. Fonts are from free font websites but will likely be changed during site redesign.Features
- (future) custom database
- database driven content
- interface for easy content addition
- ruby on rail or drupal implementation
