jPlaylister
Last Contribution: 2013-03
Status: Live | Actively Developed

Description

The jPlaylister is kind of like a front-end for jPlayer (the famed HTML5 javascript audio/video player). It allows you to build a jPlayer Playlist more easily, or with much less overall work. By simply extracting the source to your web-server and copying your files into the 'media' folder from the source code, the songs will be made available on the demo page's JPlayer implementation.

The original project has been overhauled a few times to add more features. Most notable among them are: subfolder recursing, playlist sorting options, folder/filetype filtering options, album art display as poster image (for a/v or media playlists), playlist cacheing (for large playlists), and server

Role

I developed this after being revolted at the idea of hand-coding a 150 song playlist for my jPlayer implementation. Instead, I wrote a small script to read all songs from a given directory and use that information to build the playlist. The project has grown to do much more, with many features being suggested by users. The code normally gets downloaded 50+ times a month.

Features

  • url-argument responsive
  • on-the-fly av playlist creation
  • HTML5 media player extension
Photo Feed Display (RSS/Atom)
Last Contribution: 2012-10
Status: Live | actively developed

Description

This is my first attempt to actively 'give back'. I've written code snippets that, I hope, are useful to others in the past, but this is an active site that allows others call a 'widget' to host and display thumbnails from a photo (rss/atom) feed.

This is useful from the html-dabbling blogger to CMS customizers to advanced custom site coders who don't want to reinvent the wheel just to display some thumbnails of a photo feed quickly and in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

This little widget is my biggest hit, being used more than 85,000 times a month!

Role

I wanted to parse a Photo RSS Feed for use on a personal site of mine (http://nick.chapmanit.com). After I 'finished', I wondered how easy it would be to use the same code to parse Photo RSS Feeds from other sources (FlickR, Picasa...). Turns out, as long as they are well-formed Feeds, that parsing them with the same code usually only required a few minor code changes. So I automated it and cached the thumbnails to decrease bandwidth usage...and what you see is the current version.

Features

  • photo feed display embeddable widget
  • live demo
  • widget builder -- allows novice coders to more easily customize a photo feed using the available configuration variables for painless implementation
The Palette Fine Arts Gallery
Last Contribution: 2012-06
Status: Live

Description

The Palette is an online art gallery. The site is designed to showcase the available artwork which will be available for sale to the public. The site differs from traditional galleries in that art can also be rented for approved functions in addition to being purchased. There are also frequent promotions which aim to give quality art to site visitors.

Role

I was approached by the Art Director with the concept for TPFAG and was interested immediately. A designer I work with often skillfully rendered the web design which was heavily influenced by original concepts derived from meetings between myself, the director, and another consultant. The site aims to be more interactive than typical sites, offering features such as the ability to view a piece of art in office, bedroom, and living room type settings.

Features

  • custom database and content management system for art and artists
  • systems analyst duties for determining client needs and proposing options to achieve desired end timely, and cost-effectively
  • custom site design
  • complex design which allows all art to be viewed in a range of virtual settings
Franchesca's Custom Cakes
Last Contribution: 2011-04
Status: Removed

Description

Update:
The site has been removed from active use due to a lack of time by the owner to dedicate to cake making. The link points to an archived version of the site.

Franchesca's Custom Cakes is a business where the cakes and desserts of your dreams are made at an affordable price! Behind the scenes is a limited CMS so that Ms. Franchesca can update the site quickly and efficiently by adding cakes as she makes new ones.

Role

This site's custom design was entirely the collaborative work of the owner's vision and my application, though inspiration was taken from a couple of other cake sites Franchesca had seen and appreciated.

I designed and coded this site after some digital communication between myself and Franchesca. The site's direct approach lets the cakes take the front seat, while offering relevant information to site visitors via simple navigation.

Features

  • Basic CMS functionality
  • Custom graphics (logo and fav icon)
  • Custom site design based on clean, three column layout
  • Google web font implementation

    Role

I designed and coded this site after a meeting with Pastor Winifred based on a theme variation SunProjectSystems I had designed. It is straightforward and to the point. It is sparse enough to stay out of the way and let the content be the main attraction. The graphics are all CC and Public Domain images.

    Features

    • custom database
    • database driven content
    • user friendly, custom CMS
    • free to use CC and PD images

The EarthSync Energy Modernization and Climate Change Technology Hub is a commercial site designed to identify high level issues and technologies relevant to climate change mitigation and general sustainability.

    Role

This was my first big project which became a polished site. The EarthSync Companies hired me to build this site from the ground up. I worked from an inital layout based on a word document which has been completely overhauled multiple times. New initiatives, product deployment, communications, sales channels and special event projects are examples of SPS support areas. Knowledge and innovation management are part of the added value project process SPS offers.

    Role

This is another EarthSync Companies Project, so naturally I was interested in working on this site. The site is similar in layout, form, and function to EarthSyncHub.com. It is article driven and allows submissions from authorized users into designated categories.

    WPS | DNR Tools
    Last Contribution: 2009-11
    Status: Functional Demo

    Description

It is often argued, perhaps equally often proudly claimed, that programmers are lazy. While some prefer euphemisms like efficient or practical, there is some truth to the claim. The end result of a program is frequently to reduce the time spent on some task -- to automate it. That is the case with this project as I designed it to automate a daily task I was assigned by Waterbury Public Schools. The total time put into the project was greater than what I would have spent individually for about a month, but this program will likely by far outlive my current job designation.

    Role

I designed this site/web application from the ground up, with some strong design and code references to SPS and a few other past projects. The absences reported for the district are imported daily (automatically) and immediately become available for the DNR Reports. The reports display in the browser and are available in a .csv file for download.

    Features

    • custom script for automated daily imports
    • administrative tools for custom imports
    • LDAP / Active Directory integration
    • secure authentication
    • JQuery UI utilization
    • custom navbar with location identifier
    The Satire
    Last Contribution: 2009-06
    Status: Live

    Description

The Satire is a band comprised of former members of The Blamed/Left out/The Blamed is Dead. I'm a long time fan of their roots and hope to enjoy their new stuff even more. According to them, they are "5 dudes. We just want to have a good time, so come bust a move to where the games are played, it's chill, it's fresh, it's Noah's Arcade The Satire." [from their MySpace page]

    Role

I contacted The Satire when I noticed their page was no longer live. I told them I'd make a page for them out of love, devotion, and appreciation. They probably considered a restraining order...but agreed to allow me to do my thing. I basically made a Content Management System for housing the information (not database housed yet, but I'm keeping that option available) and am preparing for web-based content management in case the guys want to handle the content control themselves. Otherwise, I'll post content as they provide it.

    Features

    • modularized pages
    • custom layout and graphics
    • persistant flash based music player
This Day Will Never Happen Again
    Last Contribution: 2009-06
    Status: still kicking

    Description

This page was developed with one, simple, purpose: to remind us to seize the day. Why put off, until tomorrow, what should be done today, what needs to be said now? Tomorrow is not promised. Simply, "This day will never happen again"

I think it accomplishes its task without distraction or pretense.

    Role

A friend of mine posted the picture used as the majority of the graphical component of this page/site/app to her FlickR stream and I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to preserve it. I wanted it to always apply and never age. I wanted to make it very accessible.

    Features

    • direct, no-frills page with a simple purpose and no distractions
    PostNBeam.com redesign
    Last Contribution: 2009-02
    Status: Live

    Description

PostNBeam.com is a website designed to inform people interested in Post and Beam style homes about the options they have when preparing to and building a home.

    Role

I designed and coded this site in highschool. It begin to show it's age more and more as knowledge about and experience in web development increased. I recently decided it was a good candidate for a cms-based site update. While the content is relatively static and in that respect doesn't utilize much of the flexibility that Drupal offers, the site was easy to transfer and looks neat and clean.

    Features

    • simple, straightforward navigation
    • clear, concise niche content
    • lightbox2 graphical overlays
    • durpal CMS based
UNCA Multimedia Arts and Sciences redesign
    Last Contribution: 2007-04
    Status: Functional Demo

    Description

This was a school project. The assignment was to redesign the UNCA MMAS department pages. I chose a pretty extreme design based on a neat texture/graphic that I came across. The content was not changed, and only some of the links are working.

    Role

I created everything but the content for this site -- I developed the concept, created the layout, and implemented the html and css. The font and the background texture were used for educational purposes only.

    Features

    • creative, eye catching design
    • static html pages
    • mouseover graphics
    • a breadcrumbs navigation system
    Independent Music Reviews
    Last Contribution: 2007-03
    Status: Functional Demo

    Description

This began as a school project. The assignement was to make a low footprint (graphically minimal, easy on bandwidth) three-tier website. I decided to make a music review website where I could write my thoughts about bands, albums, and live performances. I did not have the database experience I now have and was forced to put the project had to be put on hold.

I'm excited about rehashing this project. I'm going to do a redesign, but keep some of the original elements. I'd like to have reviews by myself, my brother, and my wife to start and eventually allow friends to add their reviews as well and potentially much more.

    Role

I developed the concept, design, and layout for this site. All graphics are heavy edits of public domain images. Fonts are from free font websites but will likely be changed during site redesign.

    Features

    • (future) custom database
    • database driven content
    • interface for easy content addition
    • ruby on rail or drupal implementation
